No labouring on Selwyn campaign trail

Mr W. E. Woods, the Labour Party’s candidate for the new Selwyn electorate, spent Saturday on the campaign trail. It was a trail with a difference though: Mr Woods ran 73km across the Selwyn electorate, from Darfield to Halswell, to raise funds for his party’s campaign. He was sponsored for each kilometre covered, and also received more than $6O in donations along the way. Mr Woods, who is slightly lame from poliomyelitis, took only six hours to cover the distance

— an hour and a half ahead of schedule. When he arrived at Halswell he apparently felt so fit that he ran round the township, and three times around Halswell Park. His wife ran with him for part of the wav. and his two young daughters rode bicycles alongside The latter were sponsored by people who preferred to give to the Templeton Farm School rather than to the Labour Party. It will not be known how much was raised by the Woods family until spon« sorship cards have been processed.
