Bagpipe recital pleases

ALASTAIR MUNRO

By i

An enthusiastic audience of 150 keenly enjoyed an eagerly awaited bagpipe recital by Donald Morrison, of Aberdeen, at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre recently. Mr Morrison, with two supporting artists, William Boyle and Frank Annan, of Christchurch, played a varied selection of marches, slow airs, strathspeys, and reels with sensitive feeling for the music and fine control.

The crisp execution with which Mr Morrison played a Piobaireachd. “Lament for Captain McDougall,” a com-

position dating from the Napoleonic wars, displayed the fine control he has of the bagpipe. The highlight of Mr Boyle’s performance was a bracket of jigs, immaculately played. Mr Boyle will visit Scotland soon with a Queensland pipe band and if he finds time for solo competition at various Highland Games he should give the natives some strong competition. Mr Morrison closed his recital with more musical tunes, including some of his own composition, to which the toe-tapping audience was quick to respond.
