Knight unavailable

Lawrie Knight, the man who scored the try which clinched the test rugby series for the All Blacks against the Lions at Eden Park last winter, will not be available to assist the New Zealand side against the Wallabies and British teams this year.

Knight has ended lengthy speculation on his immediate rugby future by announcing that he will not be back in New Zealand for the present domestic season, and will be out of the running for the tour of Britain and Ireland. The 27-year-old doctor remained in France after the All Blacks’ tour late last year, and played for the Paris University Club with Graham Mourie. He has since moved to London, where he will work for a period before touring Europe. He expects to be

back in Britain to see some of the All Blacks’ matches late this year. Knight’s absence will be a blow to the All Blacks for his considerable ability coupled with exceptional determination made him a forward to be feared. After three overseas tours as a national representative, Knight finally broke into test rugby last season when he played in all four tests against the Lions at No. 8. On the subsequent tour of France he took over lan Kirkpatrick’s flanking position successfully. A thoroughly fit and dedicated player, Knight’s contribution to the second test defeat of the Tricolours in Paris last November was immense.

He is leaving a question mark over his future in big rugby until early next year.
