Quax stars in relay
PA Auckland. The Auckland University No. 1 team of P. Wilson. B. Walker, P. Riley. D. Young and Dick Quax with exceptionally fine team work overcame a first lap deficit of 15Sec to win the annua, Southland centennial harrier relay at the Avondale racecourse on Saturday afternoon. Wilson, the Onehunga to Auckland road race victor last season, could not match the fiery pace and dogged determination of John Walker, the Olympic 1500 m champion, who gave his Manurewa team the lead over the first 3500 m lap. Although handicapped severely in his training programme by his persistent leg problem, Walker handled the course brilliantly, his time of lOmin 17sec only being bettered in the last lap by Quax. who ran it in 9min 59sec.
