Search called off
NZPA Canberra No further air search would be made for. the missing skipper of a New Zealand yacht, Bill Belcher, unless further information on his possible whereabouts came to hand, said a spokesman for the Marine Operations Centre, Canberra. yesterday. Mr Belcher’s yacht, Josephine 11. was found wrecked on Middleton reef, 250 km north of Lord Howe Island, on May 2, and the area was searched later by the Navy destroyer escort, H.M.A.S. Swan.
R.A.A.F. Orion and Hercules aircraft also made a search on Saturday but failed to find any sign of Mr Belcher or his liferaft.
Mr Belcher, aged 66, of Auckland, was competing in the single-handed yacht race from New Zealand to Mooloolaba, Queensland. Ships and aircraft in the area have been asked to watch for a liferaft.
