Car prices up 30 %?
PA Wellington The price rise for new cars, estimated at 15 per cent this year, could increase as much as 30 per cent if there is no Budget relief for car assemblers. This was the warning from the car industry j which has not been significantly helped by the relaxain purchase terms earlier this year.
New-car registrations in the first quarter of this vear are about 3000 down on the same time last year.
Against Government estimates of 65,000 new-car registrations last year as a breakeven point for the industry. there were only 59,074 registrations.
This is expected to fall to 54,000 to 55,000 this year, and even with further relief it is not anticipated the figure will go over 60,000. This is compared with just under 100,000 five years ago.
