Lucky first win for Woolston
PA Hamilton Woolston Working Men’s Club claimed its first Rothman’s Soccer League win at the expense of Hamilton — Hamilton’s fourth defeat in a i row — at Muir Park, Hamilton, yesterday. But although Woolston scraped through with a 3-2 I win, Hamilton gave a more i encouraging display than in .recent weeks and was un- ’ lucky not to draw after a I penalty rebound was disallowed. It had the bigger I share of possession, and [more chances of scoring. I While all five goals were well taken, they were each a [direct result of careless defensive errors, and in this department, Woolston was slightly more secure. Goals in the twenty-third and thirty-second minutes by Alf Stamp and Keith Niede- , rer gave Hamilton a 2-0 lead I until just before half-time. ! The Woolston striker, Neil Francis, slipped through the
Hamilton defence to pull one goal back, seconds before the half-time whistle. In the fiftieth and sixtysixth minutes goals, both shot firmly home by Bruce Chalmers, put Woolston in front. Hamilton mounted some promising attacks to try and equalise, with Keith Nelson heading against the crossbar on one occasion.
Then in extra time, Hamilton was awarded a penalty for a handling offence by the Woolston centre back, Colin Chisholm. Nelson placed his s; ot kick to the right of the keeper, Neville Petrie, but he dived across to stop it. Nelson put the rebound into the net but the referee. Bill Munro, disallowed the “goal.” According to his watch, time was already up before Nelson took the kick .so according to the rules, the I game had to finish directly after the penalty kick was I taken.
