One vacancy in badminton team
The fourth woman member and the reserves are likely to be the main points of interest when the Canterbury Wisden Cup badminton team is announced on Sunday. It seems almost certain that the men who have served the province in recent years will be retained and in the same playing order. They are Peter Whiting, Geoff Miller, Warren Edgecumbe, and Paul Boatwood. The other although getting near the veteran stage still commands a place on his doubles ability. There are a number of candidates for the men’s reserve, who, depending on how Canterbury fares, could have a match or two. Brian
Williams has filled the role before but the chance may be taken to use one of the promising younger players, Ross Campbell or David Ross. Alison Ross and Glenys Waller, who only recently declared her availability, are certain to retain their placings as the top two women. Although she has not had much play this year, Diane Erikson should hold her position at No. 3. Chris Reay, who was the fourth woman last year when Canterbury finished third behind Auckland blue and Waitemata, is not playing at all this year. There are three claimants for her position. They are Janet Miles, Pat Duckmanton, and Sandra Chapman. The latter because
of her usefulness at doubles, could get the place. However, there is little between the three and Duckmanton has more experience. The Wisden Cup tournament will again be played
during the Queen’s Birthday week-end. The venue is Wanganui; Canterbury has had to settle for minor placitigs behind the two Auckland entries and Waitemata for;
some years. While it can hope for no better this time, the fact that it finished ahead of one of the Auckland teams last year suggests that second placing is still a realistic goal.
