Young Quinn to resume in July
NZPA Washington' I Young Quinn is alive and j well out on the West Coast — just in case New Zealand fans were wondering what had become of him. But he is not quite ready to race again. The New Zealand chamI p on, winner of $742,087, i developed a minor splintbone problem in March and missed his engagement in a $50,000 Cup race at Wondsor, Ontario, on April 6. He has not raced since jand will not be ready again i until some time in July. His trainer, Charlie Hunter, : back from another buying trip in New Zealand, told NZPA yesterday that he will race Young Quinn at Meadowlands, New Jersey, or Sportsman’s Park, Chicago. in the latter part of the summer and then bring him back to the West Coast for the autumn meeting at ' Hollywood Park, Los Angeles. The pacer will be tuned up for his eastern campaign with a couple of starts at i Sacramento or San Francisco.
Hunter, who is commuting between the United States
'and New Zealand to buy horses for the Central Standardbred Agency, said Young Quinn’s splint did not develop into lameness. “The problem was not rsidily apparent and showed only after he worked hard,”, Hunter said. “X-ray therapy seems to have fixed it but the veterinarian ordered him out o c work for month and he’s just starting to train again this week.” Hunter also suffered another setback recently when fine young pacer, Balgove, hurt a fetlock in his stall. The horse’s North American debut has been set back a couple of months. Hunter will move to Sacramento at the end of the month with Young Quinn, Balgove, the trotter Compadre and another group of horses due to arrive soon from New Zealand. Meantime, he has sent the former New Zealand Cup winner, Lunar Chance, east to Robert Mitchell for ai summer campaign at I Meadowlands. Lunar Chance . ran ai couple of seconds and ai third in his most recent outir.gs at the Los Alamitos (Los Angeles) meeting which 1 finished last week-end.
