Debating final to Waimate team
The Hook Club team won the Young Fanners’ regional debating final at Lincoln College recently. The team, representing the Waimate district, included Messrs R. Chapman and I. Moore and Mrs Maureen Ponsonby. It beat the Waihcrra club, representing the Christchurch district, in a debate on the subject, “That the power of the people has been lost to bureaucracy.” The Waihora team consisted of Messrs P. Graham, I. Minson, and J. Macartney. The judges were Messrs D. Glass, C. Thomas, and G. Bull. The public-speaking contest of the Christchurch district of the movement was won Miss Julie Grey, of, the Yaldhurst club, whose subject was marriage. Mr P. Hanrahan, of St Bede’s, was the runnerup. The judge was Mr O. Osborne.
Miss Grey will go on to the regional final at Fox Glacier on May 5.
Misses Carolyn Crawford and Lyn Calder, of the Yaldhurst club, will also take part in the regional final. The Canterbury regional stock-judging contest was contested by 78 individual competitors and 14 teams. Christchurch A headed the teams’ section with 999 points, followed by Mid-Canterbury B with 995, and Mid-Canterbury A and Timaru A each with 979. The best individual points were returned by A. Kay (Christchurch A) with 1090, D. Letham (Mid-Canterbury A) with 1054, and G. Letham (MidCanterbury B) with 1053. The most successful woman competitor, Miss Lillian Pawsey (MidCanterbury A), had 883 points.
