Bells out the window

The 10 bells in Christchurch Cathedral which will be replaced will probably be winched out by a hydraulic crane through a louvre window in the spire, according to Mr A. P. Whitehead, the cathedral’s ringing master. Mr Whitehead said that plans for the removal of

the bells had not yet been finalised. The louvres had been measured and all the bells could go through, he said. The largest tenor bell would have to be placed on its side but it would have about 30cm to spare. The oak frame on which the bells are fixed will be replaced by an iron frame. The wood, which weighs

10 tonnes, was in slabs, of 40 sq.cm x 581 cm in length, said Mr Whitehead. “The oak is 90 years old and well seasoned but it was the shaking of it that played havoc with the bell-ringing,” he said. Nothing had been decided as to the future of the wood, he said.
