National Party candidates
National Party candidate* for the Christchurch Central and Avon electorates were announced yesterday.
The candidates selected were the only nominees for the two seats, both of which are held by Labour members of Parliament who recorded big majorities in 1975. Mr T. P. George, aged 42, a clerk, who was the National Party’s candidate in the Avon electorate in 1975, will again contest this seat. In 1975, Mr George polled 4892 votes compared with 10,395 polled by the sitting member, Mrs M. D. Batchelor
Miss Harriet Anderson, aged 27, an insurance agent, will contest the Christchurch Central seat at present held by Mr B. G. Barclay, who in .'975 polled a Labour majority of 2973. Miss Anderson is the chairman of the St Alban* branch of the Young Nationals. In 1975, she worked as campaign organ-
iser for the Australian Liberal Party member of Parliament, Mr R. J. Birney. Nominations for the National Party candidate to contest the Sydenham electorate will close on Friday and the candidate will be announced on May 8. Five nominations have been received for the party’s candidate for the West Coast seat. The candidate will be selected at a meeting in Greymouth on Saturday evening. The nominees are Mr D. C. Carruthers, aged 26, a Greymouth lawyer, and chairman of the Greymouth branch of the National Party; Mr G. K A. Ferguson aged 50, a farmer, at Ahaura; Mr W. D. Johnston, aged 50, a motel and garage proprietor, of Haast; Mr A. S. G. McGeady, aged 64, a farmer, of Coal Creek; and Mr M. R. Ross, aged 46, a lecturer in international affairs at Victoria University.
