Teachers’ salary claims
Sir, The take-home pay for secondary teachers, after having seen their advertisement, appears to me to be quite adequate when one considers their ages and the fact that their training and study are not long past. The ones who are married may have spouses also working, in which case they could be very comfortably off. They should realise that their training and academic qualifications in this changing society do not necessarily guarantee a substantial meal ticket. I taught for 20 years. Fifteen of them were inadequate in terms of take-home pay for a single-income family, so I worked at part-time jobs. Secondary teachers need to get more in touch with reality, meet other members of the work force who are less fortunate, and develop a less materialistic attitude to their work. — Yours, etc., PETER LOVE.
