Compassion
Sir, — Every newspaper is full of signs of the times in which we live — the pointless torturing of a trout taken from the River Avon; news of 25 children using gang torture methods against a 70-year-old woman, in order to take a few dollars; accounts of folk dedicated to the interests of young people being seriously threatened by them. I submit that the state of affairs today cannot be entirely unrelated to the hardening of the heart, the stifling of compassion, which has been necessary over so many years in order to support the continuous matter-of-fact, slaughtering of millions of animals. Couldn't we show our sons from babyhood that cruelty towards anvthing that lives need not be an automatic reaction and encourage our daughters not to become apathetic towards cruelty? We need today’s missing link — compassion« — Yours, etc., N. MILANOVICH.
