Scheme to use wastes planned
A scheme to re-cycle industrial waste and manufacturing off-cuts will be set up in Canterbury soon by the Department of Trade and Industry. More than 1600 letters were sent last week to factories and service groups which might be interested in the Canterbury Waste Materials Exchange, said the director of the department in Christchurch (Mr G. D Rudd) yesterday, The project is part of the Government’s effort to set up a national waste register,
matching companies with wastes to dispose of with those which have a use for them. The department would act as a “broker,” Mr Rudd said. The Canterbury Waste Materials Exchange is based on the Wellington exchange, which has been working successfully since last September. The scheme was expected to save the country millions of dollars by stopping valuable resources from vanishing into rubbish tips, Mt Rudd said.
