Arapawa goats

Sir, — Anyone who cares for our indigenous plant and birdlife can only

view with alarm and amazement the campaign to save Arapawa Island goats. Of all mammal imports they are the most destructive and the strip of coastal vegetation along the eastern side of the island is of such a rare nature, considerably modified by the vagaries of a Cook Strait climate, that it should be preserved at all costs. It also forms an important part of the Marlborough Sounds Maritime Park. Any person contemplating support of the campaign should also inquire into the real pedigree of the goats. It is commonly believed that they are unsullied descendants of goats brought to New Zealand by Captain 'Cook. In fact, their line has almost certainly been affected bv Angora goats landed on the island in the 19205. Inter-breeding of late has also contributed to physical debility and disease. — Yours, etc.. PHILIP TEMPLE. Little Akaloa. April 27, 1978.
