Firm lands big squid order
PA Dunedin Wrightson-NMA has sealed an 'xclusive squid contract with Japan. The deal initially will be worth nearly $30,000 and might be worth much more later. The fisheries division of Wrightson-NMA, based at Dunedin, has received the order from a Tokyo company which it has not named. The fisheries manager (Mr I. A. McLiitock) said the Tokyo company has told him it would take "all the squid we’ve got at the moment, plus another tonnes.”
The company has about IS tonnes in store, and hopes to catch the addi-
tional 20 tonnes. Mr McLintock said that if more than 20 tonnes were caught, a bigger market might be available. The company will receive about $7OO a tonne by the time transport to Japan is deducted. Mr McLintock said the Japanese firm had described sample products sent by the company as “good” for both freshness and quality. ■ The squid has been caught by company boats working from Moeraki and Karitane. The season for squid is near its end, but the firm hopes for repeat orders next year.
