Ashburton could see Canis Minor returning to form

Canis Minor looks favourably placed to reinstate himself as one of the more promising staying prospects in Canterbury when he contests the Robilliard Handicap at Ashburton tomorrow.

The son of Lopez Hanover found 2000 m too short on Tuesday at Addington, especially as he was a fair way back early and the winner, Mack Dougal, paced the distance in the smart time of 2min 35.85. Canis Minor showed great speed and courage when he won over 2600 m at Addington on April 12 at his previous start. He returned 3min 22.95, a time seldom approached by a C 3 pacer. Canis Minor has begun much better at his last two starts than at any stage of his career. His wide barrier draw should help him and it will be surprising if he fails to make a bold bid. Seafield Hanover, from Richard Brosnan’s successful Kerrytown team, has not raced since she was successful in smart time on a dead track at Rangiora earlier in the month. The opposition will be stronger this time, but that should not stop her taking part in the finish.

Remorse has taken time to strike form this season, but her latest efforts have been of a high standard. She was runner-up to Mack Dougal on Tuesday, coming on with a determined run in the straight. In her present form she must be a leading chance.

Mack Dougal, Jaunty Hanover and Transglo will start from 10m. All have fine efforts to their credit on grass tracks and any one of them could go close to winning.

The three-year-olds. Sir Robin and Orfeo, could be more than a match for their older rivals in the second leg, the Somerton Handicap, a race in which Butler Belle, Armbro Rhythm, Hydro Byrd and Lord Burlington command respect.
