Unpaid rates exceed $1M
More than SIM in Christchurch Citv Council rates remained unpaid at the end of March; about 75 per cent represented present rates and charges. Although the $1,099,000 figure was up 25 per cent on the $BOO,OOO outstanding at the end of the last financial year, it was a similar amount when this year's rate increase was
taken into account, said j the City Treasurer (Mr F. ; M. Sowden). But the rate figure, from s a total council bill of SIBM, ! means that more persons i will be paying penalties. Last year’s outstanding rates were collected “fairly early in the New i Year,” Mr Sowden said, \ and follow-up procedures were even better this year. 1
