Aust. skiers dominant

PA Wanganui Australians captured five of the six major placings al the world zone three water ski-ing championships at Lake Wirltoa, near Wanganui, on Saturday. The outstanding competitor of the five-day competition was the Australian, Bruce Cockburn, who won the slalom and jump events as well as coming second tn the tricks section. He easily took the men’s over-all title, followed by his fellow team-mate, Craig Ironsand. and two top New Zealanders, Gregg Scott ana Paul Wigglesworth. The Australians made a clean sweep In the women's section, with Sue Burton finishing 123 points ahead of her nearest rival. Karen Bowkett, and the third place-getter, Sue Wright. Burton won the slalom and took seconds in the other two events, and Bowkett and Wright won an event each to show the capabilities of the Australian team.

Fourth place went to Auckland’s Anne Carmichael, whose sole major placing was a third in the tricks

Coupled with the world zone three championships were the New Zealand championships. In these Waikato’s Gregg Scott and Anne Carmichael proved far too good for their oponents. Scott won the over-all title in the men’s A division by a huge 468-point margin, while Carmichael’s victory over the West Coast-North Island girl, Julie Hunger, was a huge 878 points. Wigglesworth, after skl-lng into fourth place In the world series, could manage only third placing over-all in the New Zealand men’s section, more than 500 points behind Scott.
