Real rescue by exercise group
PA New Plymouth A search and rescue exercise on the southern slopes of Mount Egmont on Saturday turned into a real rescue when three Wellington schoolgirls collapsed from exhaustion.
The girls had to be taken off the mountain bv helicopter in very poor flying conditions. About 60 Search and Rescue personnel from Taranaki were on the exercise when they were told by the New Plymouth police that a girl had collapsed on Fantham Peak. The girl was with a party
of 40 sixth-formers from Queen Margaret’s College, Wellington, which was on its way down the mountain after a day-long biology trip. Seven adults and a National Park ranger were with the schoolgirls. The police call came about 4 p.m., and within minutes one of the exercise parties on! Fantham Peak was on thei scene and helping the party down the mountain to Kapuni Lodge. By this time three girls had collapsed and had to be carried down by stretcher and so a helicopter was called in.
