Final world swim trial

Anne Breekveldt and Sally-Ann Jenkins, the two Auckland synchronised swimmers who had their final trial for the world championships at the | Canterbury championships at the week-end, will not know until next month if they have been chosen for the •world event. Any recommendation from i the national selectors (R. Shakespeare, R. M. Webb ■ and J. H. Johnson) will be I made at the next meeting of I the council of the New Zeai land Amateur Swimming. ■ Association on May 2. , That both girls had trained hard since they last I performed in Christchurch in ! October was obvious. In the open duet thev | scored a high 170.46 points. In the figures Jenkins did exceptionally well to score 95.65 points, with Breekveldt • a little behind with 88.61 points.

Third place in the open figures went to a Southland girl, Karen Gunby, who is only a junior.

Two selectors were expected to watch Jenkins and Breekveldt but one was held up at Wellington Airport. The Christchurch member of the panel, Mr Johnson, will have to make the decision alone on whether the girls will compete in the world championships in West Berlin in August. The Canterbury championships, the first to be held by that centre, were a success with its 30 entries, in spite of the non-appearance of eight from Upper Hutt and five from Wellington, whose flight could not leave Wellington.

Two Canterbury girls, Wendy Anink and "Maureen Berry, shared the main honours in the novice section. In the solo routine they were first equal. In the figures Anink was first by 0.33 of a point, the differs ence by which she won the aggregate title also. Breekveldt and Jenkins highlighted the large gap between the top and middle competitors in New Zealand.
