Near centuries open test
NZPA Port of Spain, Trinidad Basil Williams (87) and Alvin Kallicharran (92) narrowly missed centuries on the first day of the fourth cricket test against Australia at Queen’s Park, Port of Spain yesterday. Williams, who made 100 in his test debut in Georgetown, Guyana, last week, helped to pull the West Indies out of early trouble with a 95-run partnership with Larry Gomes (30) for the third wicket. Then Kallicharran blasted 16 fours on his way to 92 before lofting a simple catch to Graham Yallop at cover off Wayne Clark. The West Indies finished the day at 283 for eight. Australia was unable to take full advantage of winning the toss and sending the West Indies in on a damp
wicket. The first two wickets fell with only 16 on the board but the West Indies batsmen fought back well. Of Australia’s bowlers, Clark took three for 65 and Thomson and Jim Higgs took two wickets each. The match, to be played over five straight days, will continue today. WEST INDIES First innings A.
