Checkers deservedly won one of the most important games of the season when it beat the titleholder. Mairehau A. in a leuse and exciting game of women’s A grade basketball at Christchurch Boys’ High School on Saturday. Four minutes had passed in each half before either team started scoring and the rate did not pick up much after that. Checkers led. 16-10. at half-time. Both teams had excellent defences and made scoring difficult. Checkers, however, had two accurate shooters in Robyn North, and Sharon -Rennell who had well earned totals of 17 and 14 respectively. Mairehau’s best score came from Kay Adamson who managed eight points. Both teams were keen to gain possession and over eagerness sometimes resulted in careless ball-handling. With two minutes to go, only three points separated each side but quick scoring by Checkers
allowed them to get ahead. 39-29 by the end. University beat Rebels. 66-45. in another game. The team was quick to gain possession and made a number of fine goals. J. Douglas played in a determined fashion and top scored lor her side with 14 points. At half-time University led, 33-20. and with some capable team work continued to widen its lead af*»r that. Shirley L c Warne 16. and Alona Taie 13. led the Rebels' scoring effort while the rest seemed content to play in mid court. Rangiora and Christchurch United were well matched and they played a close if sometimes scrappy game. At half-time. Rangiora led narrowly. .31-25. Heather Carr was the backbone of Christchurch United’s attack giving a solid performance to score a creditable 22 points. Kim Smith (Rangiora) made good use of her experience, scoring a high 32 points.
