Big soccer defeat
Dunedin City moved to the top of the Broadlands Southern League soccer competition with a big 8-3 win over New Brighton in Dunedin on Saturday. The leading contributors on the scoring sheet for City were the former Caversham and Nelson United player, Carl Steele, with three, including two penalties, and Nigel Debenham with two.
Cashmere-Wanderers beat Western, 4-2, at English Park to take over second position while Shamrock, with a 2-1 win over Technical, won its second successive match. Goals by John Brand ana Rob Cook were enough to beat Technical, whose goal was scored by Murray Smith. Rangers won its first match this season, beating Caversham, 2-1, while North End United beat lorthem Hearts. 1-0.
Matches in the Broadlands Qualifying League resulted.— Burndale United 1, Halsweil 2; Rangiora 1, High School Old Boys 1; Timaru City 1, Nomads United 0: University 0, Christchurch United 3; Woolston W.M.C. 1, Papanui W.M.C. 3.
