Student avoids charge
PA Wellington Mr James Movick, a student leader, returned to Fiji to escape an overstaying charge, but will continue his efforts to get a permit to stay in New Zealand. His post as the New Zealand. University Students’ Association’s international vice-president will be held open in the meantime. He was to have appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington to face an overstaying charge, but, with the approval of the Crown Law Office,'chose to! return to Fiji because a conviction would have ended his chances of getting a permit to stay here. The Victoria University admissions committee has decided to allow Mr Movick to take a course there next year, which helps the students’ campaign to get him a permit. The Government’s Education Advisory Committee will hear Mr Movick’s appeal for an extension of his student permit. The Minister of Immigration (Mr Gill) has said that Mr Movick cannot stay without a student permit, even though he does not wish to study while he holds the full-time paid post of international vice-president.
