24 die in wave of violence
NZPA-Reuter New Delhi At least 24 people have been killed in clashes in two northern Indian States and i violence has also flared in other parts of the country.
Seventeen died when rival Sikh religious factions fought in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar in Punjab State. At least seven were killed when the police opened fire on rioting {workers at a university in [Uttar Pradesh, the Press Trust of India reported.
The “Times of India” newspaper put the death toll at Pantnagar Agricultural University, 300 km northeast of New Delhi, at 16.
In Bhopal, capital of the'] central Indian State of Mad-/ hya Pradesh, 30 policemen! were injured in a clash with! students demanding the! postponement of exam-1 inations. The police used tear-gas! in Calcutta to disperse a crowd angered by the death! of a 10-year-old boy in a road accident. In the south Indian State! of Tamil Nadu, where farm-; ers have been agitating! against the Government, the! police shot seven people dead earlier this week. The! police said that 3000 farmers! seeking a reduction in land taxes had attacked them.
The death toll in clashes in India this month is 35. The Army has been called out twice to restore order. In New Delhi, the Indian President (Mr Neelam Sanjiva Reddy) has signed into force an act of restoring certain civil liberties removed from the Indian Constitution during the emergency rule of the former Prime Minis-j ter. Mrs Indira Gandhi. This week Mrs Gandhi’s breakaway faction of the Congress Party was recognised as the official Opposition in India.
