Shipping News Pallets play big part in fast turn-round
It seems that conventional i ships can have a respectable, j turn-round rate compared i with container ships, provid|ed they are given modern ’ facilities such as those at | Cashin Quay. The Nedlloyd Loire, for 1 example, is due to berth at 7 ■a.m. today and — with a little luck with the weather — will sail again at 7 p.m., having loaded over 900 tonnes of peas for Cape Town. The secret seems to be pre-assembled cargo. The, peas have arrived at Cashin Quay transit sheds packed on pallets weighing 1.8 tonnes each. Once the ship berths it is simply a matter of running the entire consignement out under the hook using fork-lifts. The fact that there will be no discharge cargo will simplify things. ARRIVALS j Nil.
