A hard look at needs of elderly
Financial security, adequate housing, and the maintenance of physical and mental health are the main ■ worries of the elderly, 'according to a preliminary ’study in Christchurch. ' The study involving 40 ' elderly persons was done by ■ the Canterbury Aged People’s Welfare Council, with financial support from the Jaycees, the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation, and the University of Canterbury. ’ The chairman of the council (Dr G. R. Riley) said that his group was anvious to find out the needs of the elderly, as well as their expectations. The council could help them satisfy these needs, he said.
• | “This study will help us ■ to set down guidelines for 11 later research and as such is part Of a programme to find out what our ‘consumers’ want,” said Dr Riley. I Elderly people owed it to | themselves and to their community to maintain mental Hand physical fitness, and so avoid the isolation which led ito depression and apathy. 1 ■ “Old age should never be [accepted as a diagnosis. We ( (now know that older people , (Can do far more to extend themselves than has been thought,” he said. Other surveys will be completed over the next four months, including surveys on people in pensioner I flats, geriatric homes and [rest homes, and the elderly! 'living in their own homes. lli
