Mr Ru Shaw, an inspection engineer, is dwarfed by an energy absorption block, which weighs 70 tonnes and is 4.8 metres high, at the end of the Pukaki dam diversion culvert. The block was uprooted by the force of water which is p assed from Lake Pukaki dow n to Lake Benmore to maintain lake levels in the Waitaki system. While the Ministry of Works and Development replace the damaged block the water stored in Lake Pukaki will not be available for other hydro lakes further down the river. The job may take up to two months.
