The author of the best* selling' nook, “The-; Hite - Report” was almost exhausted as she neared tbie*'® end of a hectic four-day “ publicity tour in New Zealand. On Thursday morning Ms Hite presented a ljhour lecture-beminar to a capacity crowd of* afebut 400 in one of the stty’s lecture . ; This was followed Immediately by a luncheon on the camnus attended
by about 30 people, Including three media representatives. Afterwards an informal discussion was under way when Ms Hite was reminded of her interview appointments with the • media. ; She became agitated and angry, disclaiming knowledge of the appointments, which had been confirmed some days ago. She then demanded to be left alone “to clear her thoughts,” . - When a male journalist returned some papers with the comment, “these are yours, honey,” she shouted at him, “Don’t call me that.”
She then said that she would not be imposed upon, that she was not obliged to talk with the media, that she did not have to tolerate the pressures being forced on her. Ms Hite then swept out of the building, uttered several expletives, wished death on a few people, and was taken fpr a drive by her publishing representatives.
Half an hour later the message was still an adamant “No” to interviews. She returned to Auckland late in the afternoon, to fly to Australia the next day.
