New assistant editor
Mr A. M. Menzies, news editor of "The Press” since June, 1975, has been appointed assistant editor. He will succeed Mr E. B. Lock, wli se appointment as editor was announced at the end of last month. The appointments take effect on Mav 1.
Mr Menzies, aged 47, has been a member of "The Press” staff for 25 years. He joined the reading room in 1952 after attending Southland Boys’ High School and graduating M.A in history at the University of Otago. After a year he transferred to the reporting staff and was also the newspaper’s tennis writer. In this latter role* Mr Menzies was known in tennis circles throughout New Zealand for the next 23 years, and in recognition of his work the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association awarded him a life membership of Wilding Park in 1975. During the mid-19505, Mr Menzies became a relieving sub-editor, working two or three nights a week on the cable-news desk. He became a permanent sub-editor in 1957, and 10 years later was appointed deputy chief subeditor. In 1972, he was appointed chief sub-editor, and for a time held that post and the post of news editor concurrently. In 1960, Mr Menzies visited Britain and the
United States under the auspices of the Common wealth Relations Office. He visited Vietnam and other South-East Asian Countries in 1967 on a tour for New Zealand journalists arranged by the Ministry of Defence. He toured the United States late in 1974 to study developments in newspaper production, and guided “The Press” through changes in its format a year later. Mr Menzies served as president of the former Canterbury-Westland Journalists' Union in 1956 and 1957. He is married and has three children.
