Engineer to check cage

PA Invercargill The police have asked a Southland County engineer to check a cage in which the Carlos Circus lioness. Suzy, must now perform. The owners of the circus were told by the police to keep the lioness in the cage during performances after an incident in which two children were injured during her act at Mataura on Monday evening. The engineer found all but two of the 12 sections of the cage up to standard. The two sections were rejected on minor technical grounds, which would be fixed today, said Senior-Sergeant J. RWheeier, of Gore.

Replying to allegations from circus staff that the police wanted to shoot the lioness after the Mataura incident, Senior-Sergeant Wheeler said he had told them the police would give them the option of having a veterinarian put her down, or having her placed in a zoo, before shooting her if she got out of control again.
