The Christchurch open-t heart surgical unit might be}! lin use by 1981. At yesterday's meeting of!' (the works committee of the}; North Canterbury Hospital;' Board, it was announced ’that planning for the SI.IM } unit had advanced to the.l } point that, given Govern-} ment approval, tenders could •be called by the end of this! year. The new unit, to be built} on the roof of the westi : block of Princess Margaret} I Hospital, will provide two! • operating theatres and an in-i tensive-care unit of 11 beds. ; The Ministry of Works} has approved the plans from! a structural point of view.! (The plans are now with the! } Health Department in Wei-| | lington awaiting approval to} proceed with working draw-1 ings.
