Ashburton candidate

A Lowcliffe farmer, Mr A. J. Srhoy, will be the Labour candidate for the Ashburton seat in this year’s General Election. This new electorate takes in much of the present South Canterbury seat, now held for National by Mr R. L. G. Talbot, with a majority of about 4000.

Mr Srhoy, who is 44, con-, tested the seat in 1966 and 1969. He was selected on Tuesday ahead of-Mr R. B. Candy, an Ashburton motor] engineer, at a meeting at the ■ Temuka Labour Centre. It was attended by 140 party j members.

The selection pane! comprised the Labour Party’s president (Mr A. J. Faulkner), its general secretary (Mr J. A. Wybrow), a member of the party’s national executive (Mr D. Duggan), and three district members of the party, Mrs P. Cornelius, and Messrs G. Kerr and B. Braddick.
