Teacher-training changes urged
The traditional concept of the teachers’ college as a place of lectures, tutorials, assignment*, reading, and a base from which practiceteaching was arranged, should be changed to one where demonstrations, observations and analyses and peer-teaching are This according to a Development,’’ by Professor W. Courses in educational studies should be more sharply focused on the development of teaching skills and programmes were needed in which the theory and skills were interwoven, Professor Campbell said. The report has been distributed widely by the Director-General of Education (Mr W. L. Renwick), and he is seeking comment from teachers, teacher educators and other groups connected with teaching. "Professor Campbell’s report is timely.’’ Mr Renwick said. “Concern and interest in the quality of teacher education in New Zealand is growing, and this study will make a valuable contribution both as a basis for public debate and as a source of information for the Minister of Education’s working party, which is reviewing teacher
