Akaroa land deal

The Akaroa Community Council has become involved in a majdr real-estate deal concerning the purchase of a 34-acre property at Green Point, adjacent to its sewerage works. The council has first option on the property, which includes the land, dwelling, and buildings, but has to have the approval of the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Highet) to raise the necessary finance. The council hopes to raise this from the sale of one of three blocks of land it owns in the Ashburton area.

The Akaroa Community Council is keeping the purchase price of the Green Point property “in committee” but it is known ta be in excess of $lOO,OOO. The bay and adjacent land will be developed in part for recreational use and will also provide scope for developing “other council activities.” Whether extension of the sewerage works is contemplated the council is not saying. Detailed plans for the property are evidently still under examination.
