Export fair popular
PA Auckland More than twice the expected number of overseas buyers arrived in Auckland yesterday for the opening of the Exporters’ Fair at the Ellerslie racecourse. Many have been arriving unannounced in a response which one of the fair organisers, Mr D. Do* naldson, said was typical of an increasing demand for New Zealand exports. The fair provided the launching ground for the official opening of export year last evening. Organisers estimated the number of overseas buyers in Auckland to be about 1500. Originally 600 were expected. Mr Donaldson said the fair was an unusual promotion, because instead Of taking products overseas to possible buyers, about 250 New Zealand firms had them on display for the buyers to come to see. Most buyers were from nearby countries such as Australia, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea, but there were also some from Arab countries and the United States. The main entrance and grandstands of Ellerslie are crammed with displays of virtually every type of product made in New Zealand — from heavy engineering equipment and luxury boats to ice-cream and clothing.
