Jackpots possible
PA Wellington Jackpot betting could be available to all on-course punters immediately If the necessary permission were forthcoming ’ from the Racing Authority and the Minister of Internal Affairs, according to Mr D. F. Jones, managing-secretary of Portable Electric Totalisator, Ltd, one of the country’s largest totalisator operators.
Mr Jones was commenting tn a statement on recent remarks made by Mr Ted Mitchell, a member of the Racing Authority and president of the Trotting Owners, Trainers and Breeders’ Association, who advocated an eight-point scheme for the reintroduction of jackpots to counter falling attendances at race meetings. According to Mr Jones, the manual method of jackpot betting advocated by Mr Mitchell would be cumbersome and time consuming. A five-race jackpot was simply a treble with two more races added. And any racing club presently conducting trebles could use the same equipment for jackpots.
