Shipping News Totara to be sold

The Anchor Dorman Shipping Company is to offer one of its two coastal ships, the Totara, for sale, the Press Association reports. The 855 ton Totara, and her sister ship Titoki—both about 20 years old—have been regular callers around New Zealand, especially on the West Coast run. The shipping manager of Anchor Dorman (Mr A. K. Gellatly) said from Nelson that the

decision to withdraw the Totara from the bulk trade was “sad, but inevitable.” It had been hoped that a coal trade would develop carrying Westport coal to Opua, in the Bay of Islands, he said, and in December the Titoki took a trial shipment to Opua for the Bay of Islands Dairy Company. However, with the effects of drought and the worsening economic situation, that company was now looking at cheaper local coal, Mr Gellatly said. As well, the Anchor Company had lost the contract to ship 4000 tonnes of dolomite a year to Mt Maunganui. “This would make keeping a bulk ship in sendee a completely uneconomic proposition We could stand to lose up to $250,000 a year,” he said. The Titoki. which was built a year after Totara, will now take the Totara’s place on the regular Nelson-Onehunga run. Some redundant officers will change to the parent company, the Union Steam Chip Company. The Totara arrived in Nelson from Onehunga last week and into a lay-up berth.
