Bonus for runners

Entrants in “The Press” annual Park-to-Park run on May 7 will have a double goal this year. Not only will they have gained enough fitness to consider joining one of Canterbury’s 20 or so affiliated clubs, but they will also have a chance to show their talents in Australia. Air New Zealand offers every runner in the Park-to-Park event wh has paid the 50c entry fee and finishes the course a chance of winning a free trip for two to Sydney in August to take part in the huge annual Sydney City-to-Surf fun run.

They will also be en« titled to free accommodation for four nights in Sydney, as guests of the Koala Motor Inn, Oxford Square, Sydney. Details of the Park-to-Park run were outlined yesterday by the jog coordinator for the Christchurch South Rotary Club, Mr F. J. R. Aplin (right). With him are. from left, Mr W. J. Loffhagen (re-

gional manager, Air New Zealand), Mr R. C. Rutherford (sales manager of “The Press”), and Miss Sue Turnbull (sales manager of the Koala Motor Inn). The Christchurch South Rotary Club is the originator of the Park-to-Park event. It channels proceeds of the run into youth-aid groups. Details of this work will be the subject of a

special article In “The Press.” Every finisher in the Park-to-Park run this year will get a certificate recording the achievement. As an additional incentive to keep on training, there will be a City-to-Sumner fun run on May 21, organised by the Sumner Round Table. The advice at this stage for Park-to-Park runners is

to gradually increase running training, using a shorter run and walk followed by a longer one on alternate days. Once a week double the distance of the shorter outing. Training schedules to suit particular needs are available by writing to “Runners’ Diary.” Trainee runners over 30 should have an exercise electrocardiograph examination by an exercise cardiologist who can, if necessary, recommand a more cautious training approach and/or provide a taiiormade training schedule.
