Priority action 13 Getting help

COMMONSENSE FIRST AID By the Accident Compensation Commission

The first avenue of emergency help is to dial 111 on the nearest telephone, or have someone

do it for you if you can’t leave the casualty. When you do this, the first voice you will hear is the telephone exchange operator’s. You’ll be asked which emergency service you need and you’ll be connected immediately to that service. Be as clear as you can in explaining what has happened and where. Don’t hang up until the emergency service tells you they have enough information. If you yourself are an accident victim, and for any reason are unable to complete a call, rest assured that dialling 111 — and leaving the telephone off the receiver — will result in the call being traced to its source. It may take longer, but help will come.
