Freighter rescues survivors
NZPA Canberra> Twenty passengers andj crew of a Greek cargo vessel! which caught fire and turned 1 on its side 180 km off the West Australian coast yesterday have been rescued.
However, rough seas havei thwarted attempts to transfer the survivors to a Perth- . bound ship. An Australian Transport,* Department spokesman said i a Norwegian freighter, the| Team Augwi which answered' an S.O.S. signal from the stricken vessel had picked up the survivors about midday, i The 9500 tonne Matra! radioed for help at 8 a.m.j vesterday, saying: “Big fire I in engine room. Crew going in life boats. Urgently need 1 assistance.” The Maira sank at 1.101 p.m. The Norwegian rescue ves-| sei is now reported to be heading for Perth with the survivors on board. No details are available as* to the cause of the fire or the condition of the sur-j vivors.
