Union upset at imports

The Canterbury Footwear Workers’ Union, which has lost 200 members through redundancy in the last year and has another 160 working a four-day week, will protest to the Government about the level of shoe imports. The president of the union (Mr F. N. Winder) said that the imports were not on a large scale but were having a detrimental effect on the industry in New Zealand. “There is no question about it. Many footwear manufacturers are in difficulties. Retailers have not been putting in the orders,” said Mr Winder. In the past the union had tolerated the imports but now that the industry was “in the doldrums,” members were more concerned. The union will write to the Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Adams-Schnei-der) expressing the grievance of the members. Diseases reported Seven cases of notifiable diseases were reported to the Department of Health in Christchurch last week. They were five cases of infectious hepatitis and one case each of serum hepatitis and salmonella.
