SLEEP-LX
It was a very isolated farm, and the farmer’s wife was rather, lonely. She made friends with the animals. They responded wholeheartedly. Indeed it was rather difficult to go for a walk or a ride without a following. On one of the summer’s many extremely hot. days, she set off for the mailbox at the gate. Her pony ambled along. She felt she was not alone. She wasn’t. Two lambs, a cat, the i pig and her six piglets were bringing: up the rear, the sheepdog shepherding them along. Within sight of the mailbox, an aople tree cast its welcome shade. Tethering her horse, she lay down. The pig and piglets rooted among the
fallen apples. The dog. lambs and thei cat cuddled in close to her. while the’ peace and warmth of the countryside; J worked their magic. ; When she awoke, the sun was low' . in the sky. The pig and piglets had , ’joined the others, and she was; surrounded by sleeping creatures. Hastily she collected the groceries,; papers and mail. There in the bottom’ j of the box was a printed card. “The vicar called today, but you . were not at home.” Pencilled in was a note. “I’ll call' next week. I could not bear to i disturb you.” He had to be a kindred spirit. The ! farm seemed less lonely.
