Canterbury regains golf trophy
South Canterbury made an auspicious start but failed to hold the Templer Cup in the annual women’s golf match against Canterbury at Waitikiri yesterday. South Canterbury seemed to have control in the morning matches between the 12strong teams. At the half way stage it led in nine games while Canterbury led in only two. But by lunch the initiative had changed hands, .Canterbury ... leading,. 6|-SJ. In the afternoon Canterbury came out well ahead, B|-3J, for a 15-9 victory. The Templer Cup was given by a former New Zealand champion. She won the: title twice as Miss N. E. ;
Wright and 12 years later for a third time as Mrs Templer. South Canterbury won the cup in 1976 and 1977, its only victories, although the first game in 1965 was halved. j It was not a day of autI standing performances by ithe four members of the! Russell Grace team who; I were in the Canterbury side.i ,'None of them won twice and ■ the only one to emerge with a credit balance was- Sue : i Haydon, who had a half and a win. i Sue Bishop, down early in; .her game against Alison; 'Bond, played convincingly in' I the second half to win the game but was beaten in the! afternoon by Jan Hitchons,/
|who had accounted for Sue ' Boag in the morning with a j surprisingly wide margin. ! | Hitchons, just beginning [her preparation for the Rusjsell Grace tournament, is ; likely to be a dominant I figure at Waitikiri next month. She putted brilliantly 'jin the morning. Another bright hope for I South Canterbury is Jenny jKellahan, who beat Judy Davidson in the morning and ;halved her match with Hay- ! don in the afternoon. Rita Bearman looked imi pressive at the start, chipping in twice and holing two Ilong putts against Jeanette Kinnaird, but Kinnaird J fought back resolutely to (square the match and had a
;good win over Helen Hames in the afternoon. Three Canterbury players! won both their matches, At No. 6, Sue Whitaker was most impressive. She was only three-over going out against Hames in the morning and she played lovely [golf to beat Bearman -t the ; twelfth. The athletic Whita-; ker was then level with thej Icard, a legacy of accurate; tee shots and splendid irons. • | Canterbury was strong! [near the bottom of the, . order. Diane Ritchie won’ [both her games, Lorraine; McClurg had a win and a ’half, and Bev Craigie, I brought in through the withdrawal of Chris Skinner, won both her games in her first Canterbury appearance.. J
Nan Mann’s best golf was in 1 the afternoon, when she had lan impressive victory. Results (Canterbury names first): S. Bishop beat A. Bond, 3 and 1: Jost to S. Hutchins, 2 down. S.
