Final-ball run ties cricket

A run off the final ball of the fortieth over allowed a Canterbury invitation XI to tie its limited-over . game with a Queensland invitation XI at Hagley Oval on Saturday. The la.t-wicket pair, Allan Hounsell and Gerald Cummins, were together in the final over. Hounsell hit twos off the fifth and sixth balls and a bye off the last levelled the scores at 190/9. Queensland had reached 190/9 in its 40 overs mainly from fine innings by Greg Chappell (76) and Mark Gaskell (55). with Richard Hadlee, Hounsell and Cummins the major wicket-takers. A fine stand of 63 by the I Canterbury openers, Colin | Blackman and Dave Dempi sey, gave that team a good (Chance of a win and further •prog ss was made by Derek Burrell (55) and Cran Bull j (28), but only low tallies were provided by the other batsmen. Yesterday a High School Old Boys team was far too strong for Queensland, winning the 35-over game by 96 , runs. Dayle Hadlee, in the un» : usual position of opener for Old Boys, had a flawless innings of i~7 not out, with 14 fours and two sixes. He batted only about three hours and gave no chances. (51) and Richard Hadlee (29) Old Boys went to 276/6 at the close —a rate of nearly eight runs an over. ! Queensland, made a poor start with the openers, Sam Trimble and Gaskell, both out for single-figure scores and only hard-hitting inn mgs by Chappell (49), who was dropped twice, and P. Mich-1 olson (52) gave respect-! ability to the innings. The last five wickets went for only 14 runs. The star bowlers for Old Boys were Dayle Hadlee and Geoff Allen, who both snared two wickets.
