Plunket decision ’welcome’
The Plunket Society’s decision to close its Karitane hospitals and establish family-support units has been welcomed by the Director-General of Health (Dr H. J. H. Hiddlestone). The decision was in keeping with the department’s emphasis on taking health services into the community, he said yesterday. Dr Hiddlestone said he believed the move would improve the service offered bv the society and give a better return for money. Figures supplied by the Health Department showed that the Government contribution to Plunket more than doubled in the last five vears, from 8519,00 in 1972-73 to an estimated 51.27 M this year. The figures were made up of subsidies on contributions. capital works, and medical staff salaries, and a grant to make up the society’s working deficit. Government help to rhe society for the new fam-ily-support units has yet to be negotiated.
