Western sharing top spot
Western and Dunedin City became the front runners in the Broadlands Southern League soccer competition with their second successive wins on Saturday. At Western Park, the home side beat the former Rothmans league team, Caversham, 2-0. with Peter Bremmers and Danny O’Neill scoring the goals. Western generally dominated the match, but on the odd occasion when Caversham did earn itself a chance, the Western goal-keeper. Mike Pannell, proved himself equal to the situation—twice tipping the bail over the cross bar. In a rather torrid match in' Dunedin. Dunedin City beat Rangers,. 3-1. Two Rangers plav ers, Trevor Blake and John Souter, were sent oft' and the result now leaves Rangers, one of the title favourites at the start of the season, at the bottom of the points table. Shamrock had its first win! this season when it beat New! Brighton. 2-0. at Queen Elizabeth i II Park. Goals were scored by ■ John Brand, just back from sus-' pension, and a penalty by Peter' Schuyt. Technical earned its first point !' of the season in a 2-2 draw with! North End United at Ensors j Road. The Technical scorers! were Peter Hyland, from a penalty. and Warren Quirke. while; Mark Chidley and Mitch Goodall I scored for North End. Cashmere-Wanderers was possibly a little lucky to take a point in its 2-2 draw with Northern Hearts in Timaru. Hearts missed two easy chances in the final 20 minutes which cost it the match. The Cashmere scorers were Alec Mclnnes and an own goal, while Mathieson and Keys scored for Hearts. . Matches in the qualifying division resulted: Christchurch United 1. Burndale United 1: Baisweil United 3, Papanui W.M.C. I; High School Old Boys 4. University 4; Timaru City 5,i Woolston W.M.C. 1.
