Long flight by small aircraft
PA Auckland. What is claimed to be the smallest aircraft to fly from the United States to New Zealand arrived safely at Auckland Airport. The single-engined Cessna 172. piloted by Mr .Joseph Detwiler, flew from Monterev, California, by way of Hawaii and American Samoa. The first leg of the journey took 25 hours — only one hour within the aircraft’s maximum nonstop flying time of 26 hours. Three of the Cessna’s four passenger seats were taken out to accommodate long-range fuel tanks. The aircraft has a wingspan of only 30 feet and a maximum, weight of 2200 lb. Its cruising speed during the flight was about 120 miles an hour. Mr R. D. Leach, whose Auckland-based company, arranged to have the aircraft imnorted. said it was the smallest to have made the trip.
